The Gazi Alemdar Museum Ship is on Karadeniz Ereğli's seafront, about 40 minutes from Akçakoca along the coast road. The ship is a full-size replica of the original built in 2007 and opened as a museum on 8 August 2008.
The original Alemdar was a steam salvage ship about 49 m long, built in Copenhagen in 1898. In early 1921 it was brought from Istanbul to Ereğli to carry weapons and ammunition for the national resistance forces (Kuvâ-yı Milliye). A French warship tried to seize the Alemdar; the crew and the people of Ereğli resisted. The incident is remembered as the first and only naval clash of the Turkish War of Independence.
On board are information panels about the naval side of the War of Independence, maritime equipment and historical objects. The original ship was decommissioned in 1959.
Before you go
- Opening hours and entry conditions may change by season; ask in Ereğli before you go.
- Plan it for the same day as the Ereğli Museum, the City Museum and the Toy Museum; they are all in the town centre.
