Akçakoca Melengüççeği is Akçakoca's best-known dessert and a Manav pastry with geographical indication (registration no. 279, 18 December 2017). It is said to be about 700 years old and to have entered the Ottoman palace kitchen.
It is made with "dartı" from the cream of water buffalo on the banks of the Melen River: the cream is fried down to a residue, which is then spread on dough rolled out with a long rolling pin. Finely ground walnuts or hazelnuts also go inside.
It is a dessert made for weddings and religious holidays. You can also find it at the Yukarı Mahalle Market.
Before you go
- You can taste it from women producers at the Yukarı Mahalle Market, held on Saturdays and Sundays.
